JUNE 2004 . . .
PW ! representatives recently attended a California Nutrition Network
workshop given by walking guru Mark Fenton . .
. The workshop, presented to school and government nutrition and
exercise experts, focused on changing the built environment and government
policies such as zoning codes and parking codes (as in Transit Oriented
Development) this pitch came as something of a surprise to attendees, who
expected a varient on the pitch to eat right and choose to exercise
more . . . . It would come as no surprise to Mr.
Fenton, but a recent scientific study explicitly linked time in a
car to being fat: The more you drive, the less incidental (we say
"accidental") exercise you get . . . No, really?!? All we can say is, Walk
On! . . . The Green Space Element and Conservation Element of the
Pasadena General Plan came up for updating over the spring . . .
In response to suggestions from Council Members and PW!, the Green Space
Element and Park Space Master Plan will be prepared together now, and the
Conservation Element will be prepared separately in a future activity
. . . One reason for separating the documents was the recognition of the
PW! position that a simple "Conservation Element" from the 1970's would
now be more properly be termed a "Conservations & Sustainability Element,
with a far broader and more fundamental reach . . . Such a
policy is seen as a big step in extending walkability in Pasadena, walking
being a particularly sustainable activity . . .
Walk to School Day 2004 Preparations (October 6) and Walk to School Week
(October 4-8) are underway . . . PW! Co-founder Roger Gray has encouraged
the Pasadena Dept. Health and Department of Transportation, Pasadena PD
and PUSD to co-
